Each pair of lines is a comparison of head counts: the number of people employed versus the number unemployed. For each pair of lines, the numbers are jiggered to make them equal at the start of the period. This allows for easy comparison of one line to the other in each pair, and also for easy comparison of each pair to the other pairs.
