I really don't think that's how it played out. I do not believe that there was a search for solutions. The moneyed elite has desired the death of the New Deal since the very first moment of the New Deal.
Globalization, deregulation, privatization and the morphing of capitalism into trans-national mega-corporatism are all ways of transferring even more wealth and power to the elite.
They want an impoverished, ignorant and desperate work force. It is the new feudalism.
